Bow Rail (Pulpit)
Lu Nicaj
Hello All,

Just purchased a 1980 Tartan 33 in auction. Previous owner caused some damage to a tip-top shape boat by having lines tangle up in the prop-shaft and shaft just tore the strut off. Am doing repairs now to the shaft strut but need a new shaft. Also am looking fo ra Pulpit that somehow vanished during this ordeal. I'm located in north east (City Island NY). Any direction to where i can find this would be helpful.

Thanks in advance

Congrats on the new boat!!
For the pulpit I would try a guy here in Massachusetts.  The company is called Mass Marine Parts.  He is a salvage yard.  He just might have something that could work.

He's updated his website I just noticed!

I had to replace a shaft in my last boat, also a 33, it was over $500 to have one made locally.

I did see some online options I considered as well.

Consider calling Tim Jackett at Tartan Yachts for advice on this. He is willing to help out owners of older Tartans.

I re-shafted my T37 in 2008. A few points:
  • Your main shaft material choices are 316SS and Aqualoy16 or 22. Either one will work fine in a T33 coastal cruiser. Don't cheap out on the shaft -- it is what you often need to get you home.
  • Have the shaft custom machined to your propeller, preferably tapered on both ends even if you have to buy a new coupling. This "guarantees" both ends will not be warped, takes out one more possibility of imbalance. There are a few good custom shops in New England (H&H did mine), shipping costs are a small percentage of the total. There are bound to be some in NY or NJ.
  • Be sure length and diameter are identical to the old shaft. You want the propeller to spin in its proper space.
A fine winter project!

Thank you all! Very helpful information from all,

I think i'm going to like being in this Tartan family.

I am sure i will have more questions when i start the project. Am having a local Marina do most of the work but i will provide him with the materials.. I will post a 'progress report" on the project.

Thanks
