1987 Tartan 40 - keel cracks
Author Last Post
sorry to be so late to the discussion,
that looks pretty normal.  Your plan seems good.  Find the specs on the torque setting and find a torque wrench that will handle the job.

I usually ask the yard to do that as they have tools like that.  A torque wrench to accomplish the torque on those bolts would be expensive.

I had a very similar situation on my last boat, tightened the keel bolts, fared the crack and never saw it again for the 4 years I owned that boat.

I am now the owner of a 1985 Tartan 40!!  You should write to the yahoo group.  It is much more active than these forums.
Hello Dave,

Thanks for your response. Yes, it is a hairline crack at the junction of the keel and hull. Attached please find a photo. I have sanded down the crack, so that I can make a preventative repair.
I would also like to tighten the nuts on the keel bolts, since it's not a new boat. It seems I will need very long sockets to tighten them, given their location.

Any help will be appreciated.

Jacques
I am not well educated on the subject, but based on conversations with many that are, it's not uncommon to have hairline cracks where the keep meets the hull as there's always a little motion between the two. Maybe your situation is worse than just a hairline crack. Can you post a picture? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Hello everyone,

I have a 1987 Tartan 40 with thin keel cracks at the junction of the keel and the hull. I am doing work to avoid any water to penetrate the keel. One of my friends suggested that I should try to tighten the keel bolt nuts.

The largest nuts appear to be 1 1/2" and the smaller appears to be 1 1/8". The shaft of the larger bolts above the washer are 4 1/4" long and the smaller the shaft is 3".

I am interested to know where I can find (to borrow or rent) the socket wrenches to do this work.

My boat is in Atlantis Marina in Staten Island, NY.

Thank you for your help. Apologies if my technical descriptions aren't perfect; I'm French and don't know all of these technical terms.

Jacques
