2014 NEW ENGLAND CRUISE (Rev. B)

Cruise details and signup steps

Overview

The 2014 Maine Cruise officially begins in Padanaram (i.e. South Dartmouth), Massachusetts on July 31 and ends in Castine on August 13.  Now is the time to finalize arrangements, which must all be made by July 15, 2014.

Join us for another wonderful TONE cruise with beautiful scenery and TONE camaraderie.

Participants are free to leave or join the cruise at any point.  Those with limited time may choose not to go all of the way to Castine, but rather may end their participation earlier and return home.  Similarly, those coming from north of the Cape Cod Canal would typically not choose to join the cruise until after Padanaram.  Many will participate in the entire cruise, but this is not necessary.  To facilitate TONE camaraderie, dinners are planned all along the route.

Itinerary

Major assembly points are indicated with an asterisk.  Ports between them are suggestions or illustrations only.  Other cruise participants are likely to meet up in these ports, but, since these ports are not part of a formal plan, this won’t always be the case.  The cruise itinerary provides ample time to proceed from port to port in a fairly leisurely fashion, with multiple night stays designed to enhance camaraderie.  Keep in mind, however, that after Castine, it is likely that the group will largely disperse, based on the experiences in prior years.  This will permit those wanting to return home more expeditiously to do so.

Arrangements

The cruise fee is $45 per boat.  This fee covers TONE’s incidental costs of arranging the cruise, and of providing captains bags and other items to participants.

Captains are responsible for determining which ports of call they will participate in, and in making dockage or mooring arrangements directly, except in Padanaram and Manchester.  Dinners at the four ports of call are being arranged by TONE.  The dinners at Manchester and Camden will require advance payment to TONE, while the dinners at Padanaram and Castine will not require advance payment, but will require signing up on the TONE website ($0).  For those ports, each diner will be responsible for payment to the restaurant at the time of the dinner.  You may book the dinners by going to the TONE website at www.tartanowners.org and clicking on “Events,” followed by Calendar, navigating to the appropriate date, and then clicking on the link for the event.  If you are not already a member, you must sign up as a member and use your i.d. and password to log on in order to see the available options.

Each assembly port has a TONE board member in charge:

Date    Port                 Responsible            Phone

7/31     Padanaram       Lee Andrews      631-432-1347

8/3       Manchester     Roy Mayne       617-834-4230

8/10     Camden           Sam Swoyer       860-669-1775

8/13     Castine                     Peter Crawford   603-433-2295

The TONE website has been set up to enable payment of the $45 cruise fee, $45 for the Manchester dinner, and $55 for the Camden dinner.  The Padanaram and Castine dinners are set up as $0 options solely to capture information on the number of participants.

All sign ups must be completed by July 15, 2014.  See below for further details on each port.

If you do not have web access, you may make arrangements by sending a check to our Treasurer, Mike Musen, at 147 Hancock St., Auburndale, MA  02466.  Tel. 617-527-0343, e-mail mmusen@verizon.net.  Be sure to provide your name, boat name, and specific details on which dinners you are signing up for, and the numbers of persons at each.

Other cruise preparation information

Channel 72 will be the TONE working channel during the cruise.  Call on that channel to contact other cruise participants, and monitor that channel for last-minute updates regarding activities in each port.  A roster of cruise participants will be provided by e-mail just prior to the cruise.  Make sure that your e-mail address, boat cell phone number, and MMSI number are correct on the Owner Database (click on Info, then Owner Database from www.tartanowners.org) to update this information will be used for the roster.

TONE burgees are available for $25 via the TONE website.  Click on “Boat Bazaar” at the top of the home page, then “YachtWear.”  Each participant is encouraged to fly a TONE burgee, which will facilitate locating other cruise participants.  Make sure that you place your order in plenty of time to ensure delivery prior to your departure.

While there are number of Maine cruising guides, the Taft guide, the “Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast” is the best one.  Call 207-766-2337 to order a copy.  The “Embassy Cruising Guide:  New England Coast” and the Duncan book, “Cruising Guide to the New England Coast” are also useful.  All three guides are also available from marine bookstores and at amazon.com.  The Embassy Guide and the Duncan book are often available at West Marine and other chandleries.

Come prepared for several days of fog during the cruise.  You will want to have radar, a radar reflector and an adequate supply of foghorns and replacement cannisters.  The best radar reflectors tend to have a large cross section and are often less expensive than the smaller ones.  The Davis reflectors scored well in Practical Sailor tests.

Lobster buoys are a constant threat, especially as you go further east.  There, the pot warps frequently have an intermediate “toggle” which places the line in an ideal position to snag your keel, rudder or prop, especially when the current is strong.  Always pass down current of the buoy and never between the toggle and the buoy.  The two may be separated by 30 feet or more.

Padanaram

Also known as South Dartmouth, MA, the fleet will gather at the New Bedford Yacht Club on July 31.  Mooring are $50 per night from the club, and reservations need to be coordinated through Lee Andrews.  Please provide your boat name, length and draft.  Moorings may not be booked in advance directly with the club.  Contact Lee (information above) to let him know that you will be joining us in Padanaram and whether or not you will need a mooring.  Also, sign up for the dinner on the website ($0) so that we have an accurate headcount.  Dinner will be at 6:00 p.m.  The dinner is pay on your own but we will sit together at tables.  Call the club on channel 68 upon arrival and let them know that you are part of the TONE group.

Manchester

Manchester is on the North Shore of Massachusetts, about 50 miles north of the Cape Cod Canal.  Roy Mayne (information above) is coordinating the moorings and the dinner, which will be at 6:00 p.m. on August 3 at the Landing Restaurant, 7 Central St. in Manchester (thelandingat7central.com).  Moorings at the Manchester Yacht Club are free but need to be arranged in advance through Roy.  Please provide your boat name, length and draft.  Call on Channel 78A when you arrive.  Dinner is $45 per person; pay on the TONE website.

Boothbay

Two nights are planned here:  Wednesday August 6 and Thursday August 7.  There is no organized dinner but restaurants abound in Boothbay and it is a fun place to be.  Consult your cruising guide for mooring and dockage options and monitor Channel 72 to determine what is being planned on an ad hoc basis.

Camden

The stop in Camden, which is in Penobscot Bay in Maine, is planned for two nights:  Saturday August 9 and Sunday August 10.  The dinner will be on Sunday night, allowing those who want to take their time sailing down east to arrive on Sunday, while providing a second day in a wonderful venue for those wanting to traverse the coast more rapidly.  For those interested, there will be a tour of the boatyard on Sunday morning.  Contact Ben Cashen at Wayfarer for details.  Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. and will be provided by Coastal Critters on the dock at Wayfarer Marine and will be $55, paid in advance.  Book through the TONE website.  Moorings are available from Wayfarer (www.wayfarermarine.com, 207-236-4378).  Wayfarer monitors Channels 9 and 71.  Moorings and floats in the inner harbor may also be available in the inner harbor, and moorings may also be available from the Camden Harbormaster.  Wayfarer moorings are generally in the outer harbor, which may be rolly, depending on the wind.

TONE will hold its annual meeting on Sunday night during cocktails prior to the dinner, starting at 5:00 p.m. on the docks at Wayfarer.  There will be elections of officers and directors, and all members are welcome to attend, whether by boat or car.

Castine

Castine is also on Penobscot Bay.  The stop in Castine is also planned for two nights:  Tuesday August 12 and Wednesday August 13.  For Wednesday night only, TONE has arranged for the entire 220 foot face dock at Eatons Boat Yard to be set aside (participants should make other arrangements for Tuesday night, many may anchor in Smith Cove).  We will raft 2-3 boats deep on Wednesday.  Dockage is $3.50 per foot.  Call Suzanne at Eatons, 207-326-8579 to make a reservation.  You may also e-mail Suzanne at eatonsboat@gmail.com, but be sure to call as well as Suzanne states that they do not accept reservations by e-mail.  Cash and checks only are accepted, but payment is not needed prior to arrival.  A limited number of moorings are also available for $35 per night, however there is no launch service.  Showers are available at the yacht club next door.

Eatons monitors Channel 9.  Call when you arrive in the vicinity so that they may assist you in tying up.  Participants should arrive no earlier than 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.  Make sure that you have plenty of fenders and dock lines ready as the current runs strong adjacent to the dock.

Dinner will be at Dennets Wharf, which is adjacent to Eatons.  Sign up on the TONE website ($0) so that we will have an accurate count.  We will dine together under the awning.  Each participant will be responsible for his or her own menu choices and payment.
