Refinishing toe rails on Tartan 4300
Author Last Post
Our 2009 Tartan 4300 has lots of brightwork (toe rails, bases of dorade vents, grab rails). We bought the boat two years ago and, despite having covers made, the varnish is failing on the toe rails (it is fine on the grab rails and dorade vent bases). We were quoted $8,000 to refinish the toe rail which involved lifting the boat and leaving it in a boat yard for 16 to 26 days and building a tent over the boat while revarnishing. I might be able to handle that if it yearly re-coating could maintain it for a decade but was told that even with a fresh coat each year it would have to be completely re-done every 3 to 5 years. We are not in the tropics, we are in Vancouver, Canada. I have decided that stripping the varnish and re-doing it with TeakGuard is probably the best way to go. This product is much easier to apply and worked well on the removeable teak floor of our  cockpit.  Any thoughts?

The worst spot is where the toe rail butts up against metal
